Normally cocoons would be boiled and unraveled for the hundreds of meters of silk within each one. Ango, however, uses the material in its raw form preserving both its beauty and wonder. Each light is made by hand by threading the silk cocoons onto wire and forming a randomly configured matrix structure attached to a stainless steel base.
ANGO’s unique portfolio of materials began with an exploratory trip to Bangkok’s Chinatown where lead designer Angus Hutcheson found a bag of silk cocoons in a market. He instantly recognized their potential to diffuse light and began a process of exploration and experimentation. The magic of using silk cocoons as a light diffuser stems from light being refracted by the material at different angles, producing subtly different colors and levels of luminosity.
